Cycling north-east of Tromsø

North-east of Tromsø, wild islands and stunning mountain faces along the roads are just waiting to be explored by you. The streets winding trough the beautiful Northern Norwegian landscapes will take you to coastal environments, white beaches, landscape conservation areas and glacier views. Be ready for learning about the lands history and culture, visiting archeological sites and local shops, cafés and museums.

In this article, we are providing some inspiration for approximately six days of cycling north-east of Tromsø. You can always extend your bike trip or relax for a couple of kilometers by taking bus, speed boat or ferry part of the trip.

Tromsø to Spildra (speed boat + ferry + 40 km of cycling)

To escape the busyness of the town, we recommed taking the speed boat to Skjervøy and a ferry to the beautiful island of Spildra. You will quickly be surrounded by untouched nature. Ride along the cultural path to the famous bear graves and Ravelsnes, enjoy a lunch break at the beach or relax in the island's pub.

We can recommend staying at Kvænangen adventure on the island of Spildra.

Spildra to Skjervøy and then to Arnøya (ferry + 51 km of cycling)

Take the ferry from Spildra to Skjervøy and head north towards the beautiful island of Arnøya. In Årviksand, an authentic village in the north of Arnøya, there will be time to enjoy the beach, learn about local war history or check out some of the fishing spots. There are several amazing shorter hikes on Arnøya too, so there is much to explore before heading back south to Skjervøy.

We can recommend staying at Hotell Maritim on the island of Skjervøy or Laukskletta Overnatting on Arnøya.

Skjervøy to Sørkjosen (48 km of cycling)

In Skjervøy take a look at the Salmon Center. Head south towards Sørkjosen. And on the way, you can take a detour to Spåkenes and the artillery bunker. Next to the town of Sørkjosen, you will find the Reisautløpet nature reserve with one of the largest salt meadows on a river delta in a fjord bottom in Northern Norway.

We can recommend staying at Reisafjord Hotel in Sørkjosen.

Sørkjosen to Navitdalen Protected Area and back (100 km of cycling)

Following the coast, you can make your way into the Navitdalen Protected Area. Have a look at the unique geology, flora and fauna that is now protected. Some threatened species of vascular plants have been found in this area and if you look closely, you might even see the "cat's foot", a vulnerable species only found in a few places in Troms. Navitdalen is also a major domain for modern reindeer husbandry.

Sørkjosen to Ova Raishiin Visitor Point and back (80 km of cycling)

If you are up for a some uphill sections and amazing views, the Ova Raishiin Visitor Point in Reisadalen is definitley worth a day trip of about 80 km. Other destinations that we can recommend are hiking to the Sarafossen (Sara waterfall, 2 km hike) or the Moskodalen copper mine (12 km)

Sørkjøsen to Svensby (77 km of cycling)

On this bike ride, you will enter the Lyngen peninsula, famous for the mighty Lyngen-Alps that rise from the fjords with their over 1 000 m high pointed peaks and many glaciers.

Got a lot of energy today? From Svensby it is just about 30 km to visit Nord-Lenangen in the north of Lyngen.

Svensby back to Tromsø (ferry + 48 m of cycling)

Enjoy a waffle on the ferry before cycling trough the stunning valley of Breivikeidet. More and more houses will appear as you are getting closer to the city again after a couple of days full of discovering wonderful places.
