Winter cycling in Tromsø
Cycling in winter isn't usually thought of when looking for things to do in Tromsø. Not only is it possible, it's a great way to get around the city and for exploring further afield.
If you stay on the roads, where it is hard and compact, then a winter mountain bike or electric fatbike with studded winter tyres is the best option. However, if you plan to ride on fresh snow or along the trails we recommend using fatbikes. A higher level of stamina is required if you ride on fresh snow and can take a bit more getting used to.
In winter we recommend shorter tours on Tromsøya Island or to Tromsdalen. It is possible to cycle on the groomed ski trails. Take care to give way to skiers and walkers. Please be careful not to damage the trails. There is a nice bike trail along the river prepared at times by a local club.
For a longer tour on the road, you can cycle around the southern part of Tromsøya towards Eidkjosen on Kvaløya. For longer tours in the spring on days when the snow is hard, fatbike trips from Tønsvik to Movika through the mountains following the ski trails is a great idea.
We do not mount mud fenders on mountain bikes and fatbikes. Remember to bring a wind- and waterproof jacket for the ride. A good thin hat and mittens are also a must.
In winter 2022 Matthew Tolley, a vlogger who is currently developing the website Cycle Norway, rented a fatbike from us and shared his experience on youtube.
